Make Ready: Summer Is Coming

Depending on what your school calendar looks like, there are approximately 15 days or so before school lets out for summer.

Yes, you read that right. Fifteen.

The past week I have spent much time thinking about the upcoming summer months. I am so excited. But not only because lazy days lie ahead. Not because the swimming pool summons me and Sonic Cherry Lime-Aids are more of a rule than an exception.

I am most excited about summer because of the opportunity given us as parents to intentionally invest into the lives of our kids. Time is on our side. For once.

But the next fifteen days are extremely important. To me anyway.

The Lord has given me a little tap on the shoulder as if to say, "Hey Beck, pray up. Plan. Be ready. Today is the day to be thinking ... what we are going to do this summer."

Yes, Lord. What are we going to do?

This morning I'm reading Luke 3 and can't help but notice what an intentional guy John the Baptist was. (He is one of my favorite people by the way. Love him.)

As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight." Luke 3:4

Prepare: 1) to make ready. 2) to make the necessary preparations. 3) to prepare the minds of men to give the Messiah a fit reception and secure His blessing.

John needed the people to know that things were about to change. Jesus is on His way. Today is the day to ready their hearts. Make every necessary preparation so nothing hinders the blessing of the Lord.

On a much smaller scale, isn't this true of our summer, as well? It is crucial to make every preparation now so that nothing hinders the Lord's blessing.

Over the next two weeks, let us make ready our hearts, homes and calendars. Let us make ourselves open to the will of the Father.

Let us ask him...what are we doing this summer?

What do my children need? Spiritually? Physically? Relationally?

What do I need? Spiritually? Physically? Relationally?

Come back next week as we begin to pray, plan and prepare the way....for an amazing, Christ-centered summer.

Be praying and thinking. Next week we will be praying and petitioning the Lord together.

Are you with me? Invite a friend to join us, as well.

  1. I have been mulling over how to be intentional about my marriage this summer - I am looking forward to seeing how God uses this time to bring my husband and I closer together!

  2. I am so with you! I've already got tons of my OWN plans in my head for how this summer is going to go, what studies I'm going to do, what adventures me and the kids will have, etc. Of course, these are all MY plans. I haven't stopped to ask Him once. He whacked me upside the head yesterday during my quiet time and said, "Woah! Do I get a say?" Yeah....so I'm praying through it. I have to admit- I'm so anxious about it. I just want to do what He wants to do. I'm hoping it'll be SO clear and undeniably evident.
